Robert Kent is a Glasgow man born and bred. He was brought up in a Manse, elder son of the late John L. Kent who in his day was a charismatic character and one of Scotland's most effective popular preachers and churchmen. Robert graduated MA and BD from Glasgow University. During his studies for the ministry he served as assistant to Rev Dr J Michael Orr at Jordanhill Parish, Glasgow and after his licensing by the Presbytery of Glasgow in 1971, was awarded The Peter Marshall Fellowship, studying at Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey and working on the staff of the First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa Oklahoma, USA.
After his return to this country, he served under Rev James C Stewart in Glasgow's populous Drumchapel area. He was ordained in 1973 by the Presbytery of Irvine & Kilmarnock to the Parish of Crosshouse, Ayrshire, a village satellite of Kilmarnock, where he served until 1981 when he was called to St John's in Hamilton, and inducted in April that year by the Presbytery of Hamilton.
He is married and his wife Lesley and he have three sons, Donald, Andrew and Mark.
As an enthusiast for the teaching ministry, he served a term as Convener of the Presbytery of Hamilton's Church Education Committee and is at present serving on the General Assembly's Board of Parish Education.
In 2000 he was elected as Moderator of the Presbytery of Hamilton for session 2000/2001.
